Dua's

I know most of you know the dua's to be read at the time of suhoor/sehri or iftaar. But we, here are reaching out to so many people for whom this is a first time experience.

Suhoor/Sehri is the meal we eat before the Fajr adhaan.
After the meal we make neeyat (intention) to fast with this dua:

WA BISAWMI GHADIN NAWAYTU MIN SHAHRI RAMADAN

"I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan."

Similarly at the call for prayer, in the evening. Maghrib, is when we break our fast, which we have kept since dawn without eating or drinking anything.
This meal is known as iftaar and the dua for breaking fast is as follows:

ALLAAHUMMA LAKA S'UMTU WA A'LAA RIZQIKA AFT'ARTU WA A'LAYKA TAWAWKKALTU

"O my Allah, for Thee, I fast, and with the food Thou gives me I break the fast, and I rely on Thee ."

anonymous and oussama, Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay here with us.

It is also important to add that it is ont necessery to read any supplication in arabic. English or even chinese will do just fine.

The only thing that has to be read in Arabic are the five obligatory prayers and what you say going up and down, prostrating etc.

Okay, some basic questions here.
Is the fajr prayer compulsory before/after suhoor. I am usually so sleepy, I can barely bring myself to eat.
What about the maghrib prayers? Is it pray-then-break the fast, or break the fast-then-pray. Is the prayer mandatory?
I ask this because, I usually break my fast in my office. So no place for praying. By the time I reach my home it is around 8 pm.

Salam Musafir :)

Well all prayers are mandatory/compulsory from the time they start. Ramadan or not.

If you know that eating suhoor and then falling asleep will mean that you will miss fajr, then it would be wrong to do so. If you fall asleep and wake up before fajr is over that is fine, and you still have time to pray.

But if you have suhoor, then fall asleep, and wake up (knowingly that you will wake up when fajr is over) when the time for fajr is gone and the sun has totally risen, then that would be wrong.

When it comes to maghrib, maghrib is a special prayer because it is so short, it starts from the time the sun starts to set and ends when it has set. That usually takes roughly 40 minutes depending on where you are in the world. So maghrib is not like many of the other prayer times that last for hours.

It is recommended to first open your fast with dates or fruits or water or whatever you have, then go and pray and then eat.

Are you sure you can't find a space to pray in your office?

If not and you dont come home in time before maghrib is over, then it would also not be "ok."

At the end of the day, we have to do what we can. The important thing is trying. Try your best to not miss the prayers and if you do for whatever reasons or circumstances in or out of your control, just make sure to try and make the prayers up later.

Good luck :) hope this helps.

Alright I get the message. I have to pray, come what may. All it needs is a little more effort from me. But then ramadan was never for the impenitent.
Thanx a lot SS.
