Ramadan and Generosity

Muslims all around world follow the teaching of prophet(pbuh) and the holy Book Quran. Doing charity is one of the fundamental attributes of Islam spending charity removes sins like water extinguishes fire. It is charity which saves a person on the day of Resurrection, there are many other benefits of doing charity and these benefits will increase in the month of Ramadan. Those who do charitable work in the month of Ramadan have a big reward in jannah and also in the present world.

The holy month of Ramadan is the month of mercy and for a human it is a time to correct his mistakes and ask forgiveness from Allah Almighty, as we know that Ramadan is the month of obedience and it requires every Muslims to do good acts and live their life with the teachings of Islam. The messenger of Allah Prophet Mohammad(pbuh) was the best of mankind and was the most obedient to his lord, even then he wanted to increase his worship during the blessed month of Ramadan. According to Imam Ibn al_Qayyim it is said that “The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, was the most generous of all people, but the time he spent the most was during the month of Ramadan, and he used to increase his recitation of the Qur’aan, prayers, mentioning Allaah and I’tikaaf (i.e. residing in the mosque with the intention of worship)”.

The companions were distinctly generous during the month of Ramadan. Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “There is a difference between being generous in charity and being wasteful: a generous person spends his charity in proper channels, whilst the wasteful person might spend extravagantly in places where it is not needed, and be very poorly in places where spending is direly needed”.

Imam Ibn Al_Qayyim classified the generosity in ten phrases according to him there are ten phrases of generosity and they are as follow.
  • Sacrificing ones soul
  • Utilizing ones position
  • Sacrificing comforts
  • Offer one Knowledge
  • Utilizing one prestige
  • Sacrificing Physically
  • Sacrificing ones honor
  • Being cheerful with others
  • Not longing to possess what others have
  • Delaying Zakaah until Ramadan.
So these are the ten attributes which are described by Imam Ibl AL_Qiyyam. According to him every muslim should follow these ten attributes to be a genrous person.
